The tools and technology have advanced\u00a0\u2013 but there are insufficient people to\u00a0fully master them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIM\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just software on a desktop.\u00a0It is a discipline threading through design, construction, and operation.\u00a0The work\u00a0showcased\u00a0within our new\u00a0BIM Realities report reveal a truth: digital\u00a0transformation\u00a0is only as strong as the people who\u00a0deliver and drive\u00a0it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know that for\u00a0decades, informal learning quietly carried\u00a0a mainly analogue\u00a0industry forward.\u00a0Engineers picked up modelling skills on the job.\u00a0Project teams\u00a0often\u00a0learned to coordinate through trial and error.\u00a0For a time, it worked. But as projects grow in complexity, scale, and connectivity, ad-hoc upskilling is no longer enough.\u00a0\u00a0The gaps are visible, and the stakes are high.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the\u00a0BIM Realities<\/mark><\/a>\u00a0stories,\u00a0we build a picture. The industry can no longer rely on informal, ad-hoc learning.\u00a0Structured development pathways, including certification, are becoming essential.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From isolated knowledge to organisational capability<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, we see a perceptible\u00a0shift from individual skilling\u00a0to organisational\u00a0and national\u00a0capability.\u00a0Many\u00a0of the initiatives are designed to be scaled \u2013 they focus on regional and national capacity-building.\u00a0They aim to avoid\u00a0situations where a few highly skilled individuals carry\u00a0a project, only for\u00a0bottlenecks to\u00a0emerge\u00a0when they move on.\u00a0They aim to move on from circumstances where knowledge lived in people\u2019s heads, not in shared processes or standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structured\u00a0learning\u00a0pathways\u00a0can\u00a0address this.\u00a0Planned, role-specific, measurable programmes embed knowledge across teams. Certification provides a benchmark\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a shared language of skills that partners and clients can trust.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This consistency of message and language is so important.\u00a0I loved the comment from one trainee, a civil and architectural engineer working on the\u00a0Ellinikon\u00a0in Greece:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past we faced delays and rework due to miscommunication between designers and the site – drawings\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0always match, leading to\u00a0onthespot\u00a0changes.\u00a0We needed a tool and\u00a0methodology\u00a0to unify all project information. With BIM training from Face-to-Face, I gained this capability \u2013 working in a single digital environment where architects, engineers and the site share the same model.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u00a0now\u00a0all speak the same language by looking at the 3D model, rather than trying to coordinate with drawings and phone calls.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Capability, context and collaboration <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIM capability\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just about knowing\u00a0software.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about using it well in context: coordinating across disciplines, understanding downstream\u00a0impacts\u00a0and\u00a0maintaining\u00a0quality over time. Organisations are realising that\u00a0relying solely on\u00a0ad-hoc learning is insufficient for this level of complexity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AECO work is collaborative by nature.\u00a0Designers, engineers, contractors, and operators must coordinate in real time,\u00a0sometime\u00a0across geographies.\u00a0Trust is built on predictable, demonstrable capability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stories in BIM Realities highlight that structured development and certification\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just improve individual confidence,\u00a0they build collective trust.\u00a0Teams know what to expect from each other, organisations reassure clients, and projects are less prone to error or rework.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking a strategic, long-term view<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investment in and commitment to capability development is increasingly\u00a0becoming\u00a0strategic, not just operational.\u00a0Early-career professionals are nurtured for future roles, role-specific pathways exist, and organisational memory is\u00a0retained.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This long-term perspective helps organisations to avoid reactive training and skills shortages. Structured learning and certification become investment instruments, enabling teams to be deployed confidently across projects, regions and markets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we see from the BIM Realities stories there are other tools in the mix driving change.\u00a0On-the-job problem solving, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing\u00a0are crucial \u2013 as are skills competitions, work experience opportunities.\u00a0The difference is that\u00a0all of these can be \u2013 and are \u2013\u00a0now embedded within formal frameworks, ensuring consistency and alignment with organisational\u00a0and national\u00a0goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0BIM Realities stories consistently show that the most successful\u00a0skilling frameworks (both organisational and country-wide)\u00a0use a\u00a0combination of levers depending on the market context and the learner group in question.\u00a0\u00a0Informal learning provides creativity and flexibility, while structured programmes provide reliability and predictability.\u00a0And for the future generations of engineers, designers and architects, early exposure is key.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
