The\u00a02026\u00a0Designathon\u00a0challenge itself is now over. The\u00a0two-day online event ran smoothly \u2013 the student teams learnt new skills, developed their\u00a0concepts\u00a0and\u00a0submitted\u00a0their responses to the brief.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judging is\u00a0already\u00a0underway.\u00a0Hundreds of submissions are being reviewed against agreed criteria\u00a0\u2013 our expert\u00a0jury\u00a0drawn from industry and learning are considering the\u00a0strengths of each entry\u00a0and evaluating them against a defined marking rubric. We\u2019ll\u00a0announce the winners in August.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the students who took part, the focus has shifted from creating their concepts to reflecting on their learnings, adding their projects and their certificates to their portfolios \u2013 and the wait for the winning teams to be announced!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Designathon organising team at KnowledgePoint, an enormous thank you for getting us to this point \u2013 for registering teams, for designing the challenge, for working with partners and for creating engaging promotional content.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They know, though, there is still a lot to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we\u00a0move into\u00a0the\u00a0next\u00a0phases of the programme,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0also taking the time to\u00a0reflect. This process of continuous reflection and learning is vital for me and my team \u2013 and the quality of the services we provide to our clients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a student competition could appear, from the outside, to be a relatively straightforward concept \u2013 set a challenge, invite students to participate, and choose a winner \u2013 delivering a successful competition is considerably more complex. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\u00a0lot of work happens behind the scenes. Let me lift a lid on some of what goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A competition is more than a competition<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Designathon\u00a0is, of course, a competition. Importantly,\u00a0it is also a learning experience\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a skills development opportunity, a way\u00a0for\u00a0students\u00a0to signal their skills to\u00a0industry, and a chance to connect students, educators, training\u00a0organisations\u00a0and industry experts across different markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means success can’t be measured solely by the quality of the winning submissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also about how students engage. Whether they have access to the right preparation and support.\u00a0\u00a0Whether partners are equipped to help them participate. Whether the challenge is relevant and meaningful.\u00a0\u00a0Whether the organising company (Autodesk in this case) and the sponsors realise value. And whether the experience leaves students with something they can take forward into their education and careers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These\u00a0factors\u00a0need to\u00a0come\u00a0together\u00a0in how we plan and deliver such an event. As we know from experience, that starts well before the competition itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering value across the ecosystem<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course,\u00a0a\u00a0student competition needs to\u00a0benefit\u00a0students\u00a0taking part\u00a0\u2013 that is critical. It\u00a0also\u00a0needs to deliver\u00a0more broadly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students need an experience that is engaging, relevant and worthwhile. Educational institutions need\u00a0something which complements their curricula\u00a0and\u00a0programmes of learning. Partners need the information,\u00a0resources\u00a0and support to engage their communities effectively. Sponsors need to see value from their investment. And the organising company needs to achieve the\u00a0objectives\u00a0that led it to create the competition in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If students\u00a0don’t\u00a0see the value, engagement suffers. If institutions and partners\u00a0aren’t\u00a0equipped to support participation, reaching students becomes harder. If the experience\u00a0isn’t\u00a0relevant to the brand’s\u00a0objectives, the competition risks becoming a standalone initiative rather than contributing to a wider strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, creating value for each audience needs to be considered from the outset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the timing of this piece, I have the Designathon front-of-mind, but the principles apply more broadly.  In planning and execution, we think beyond the two-day competition itself \u2013 considering the experience before, during and after the event.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We needed to connect different parts of the ecosystem \u2013 giving students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their capabilities, helping institutions engage with industry, enabling partners to support their communities, and giving Autodesk and its sponsors an opportunity to connect with the next generation of designers and engineers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students had access to self-study resources and preparatory training. Student experts shared advice and\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0key workflows. Autodesk Learning Partners provided tailored support in their markets. The competition itself combined learning with challenge, giving students the opportunity to develop their skills and then put them into practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making all these elements work together\u00a0requires careful planning, clear\u00a0communication\u00a0and a strong understanding of what each stakeholder needs from the experience. It also requires the flexibility to adapt as the programme develops and new needs\u00a0emerge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our experience, that’s what turns a competition from a standalone event into a meaningful programme \u2013 one where the different parts reinforce each other, and where the value extends well beyond the final submissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designing and judging to defined criteria <\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The judging process and criteria require careful planning. The criteria we use to assess the submissions define what we want students to focus on as they work through the challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we looking for technical excellence?\u00a0Creativity?\u00a0Feasibility?\u00a0The ability to interpret a brief?\u00a0The quality of the final presentation?\u00a0Or a combination of these things?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We give participating teams a clear understanding of what is expected, while a marking rubric gives the jury a consistent basis on which to assess submissions.\u00a0It also helps\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that the competition delivers against the wider\u00a0objectives\u00a0of the programme \u2013 from developing skills and encouraging creativity to strengthening connections between students,\u00a0education\u00a0and industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judging process therefore plays\u00a0an important role\u00a0in the overall value of the\u00a0Designathon\u00a0\u2013 and competitions in general.\u00a0It helps students understand what good looks like, gives educators and partners a clear framework for supporting participation, and provides Autodesk and its sponsors with confidence that the competition is delivering against its purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, it needs the right people behind it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our expert jury brings the technical knowledge, industry experience and different perspectives needed to assess the submissions.\u00a0The organising team provides the structure, briefing and coordination to ensure that\u00a0expertise\u00a0is applied consistently and effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these elements help make sure that the\u00a0final outcome\u00a0is about more than selecting the winners.\u00a0It is about recognising the qualities and capabilities that the\u00a0Designathon\u00a0is designed to develop \u2013 and celebrating the students who\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operational details matter<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The operational details are the engine room of a competition like the Designathon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Managing registrations.\u00a0Keeping students and partners informed.\u00a0Coordinating communications. Tracking engagement.\u00a0Supporting training activity.\u00a0Answering questions.\u00a0Managing timelines. Preparing judges.\u00a0Reviewing submissions.\u00a0Keeping everyone aligned when there are multiple organisations, countries and stakeholders involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In isolation they\u00a0could\u00a0seem simple to deliver.\u00a0Together, they make the difference between an initiative that simply happens and one that works.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It requires clear ownership, reliable processes and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to respond when things don’t go exactly to plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A successful programme needs enough structure to keep everyone moving in the same direction, but enough flexibility to adapt as circumstances change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is particularly true when working across multiple organisations and markets. It means keeping sight of the bigger picture while managing the detail \u2013 and making sure that all the different parts of the programme continue to work together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning from every cycle<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the benefits of running a competition year after year is that every edition provides an opportunity to learn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What worked well?\u00a0Where did participants need more support?\u00a0Which communications generated the strongest engagement?\u00a0Where did partners need\u00a0additional\u00a0guidance?\u00a0What could be made simpler,\u00a0better\u00a0or clearer?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These insights can then be used to shape and improve the next iteration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, a successful competition is never really a finished product \u2013 it is an evolving programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each cycle builds on the last, strengthening the participant experience, refining the operational model and helping everyone involved understand what makes the programme more effective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That continuous improvement is particularly important when the ambition is to grow.\u00a0But growth\u00a0isn’t\u00a0just about more\u00a0students, more institutions, more\u00a0countries\u00a0and more partners.\u00a0\u00a0It is about\u00a0maintaining\u00a0\u2013 and improving \u2013 the quality of the experience and the learning that students, partners,\u00a0sponsors\u00a0and organisers can take forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens next?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For now, the Designathon team is focused on the judging process and preparing to announce the winners in August. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be standout ideas to celebrate, stories to share and achievements to recognise. Announcing the winners also brings another phase of organisation \u2013 delivering the prizes and learning experiences on offer to the winning teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the real impact of a programme like this goes beyond the winning teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is in the students who have developed new skills.\u00a0The teams who have learnt how to collaborate under pressure.\u00a0\u00a0The educators and partners who have supported their participation.\u00a0The connections made between education and industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When initiatives like this are well designed and well delivered, they can become much more than a competition. They can create meaningful learning experiences, strengthen communities, develop industry-relevant skills and give students the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge may last two days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But creating the right conditions for those two days \u2013 and making the experience valuable before, during and after the event \u2013 takes much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes thoughtful programme design, strong partner engagement, careful coordination and a willingness to keep learning and improving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the work behind the competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is often what determines whether an initiative becomes a one-off event or a meaningful, scalable programme that delivers value for everyone involved.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
